The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) received word today from Canada that our former missionary colleague and friend Elder John (Jack) E. Geddes郭徳士先生was called home to the Lord on Monday, 27 March 2017

Jack Geddes (born in Canada 21 November 1930), together with his wife “Betty” F. M. Geddes was appointed as missionary partners by the Presbyterian Church in Canada (PCC) in 1958 and first arrived in Taiwan January 1959. They had six children who were raised in Taiwan (three daughters and three sons) Paul, Heather, Debbie, David, Maria, John.

They served the Lord faithfully until retirement in 2000 (culminating 42 years of missionary service), however, Jack and Betty returned to Taiwan for another two and half years in a volunteer capacity with the PCT General Assembly and finally “retired” to Canada in June 2003. Sadly not long after retirement, Mr. Geddes’ health situation declined until 2011 he needed long-term residential care; and he was lovingly supported and regularly visited by his wife Mrs. Betty Geddes and children.

During his years in Taiwan Jack Geddes dedicated his gifts as teacher and his passion for language and history to teach countless numbers of students and serve the wider community. In Tam-Kang High School, Tam-Kang University, Taiwan Theological College and Seminary so on. With appreciation and recognition of his work in 1989 and again in 1994 he received the Outstanding Professor Award, Tamkang University, MOE where he was also a founding faculty of TKU Department of History (1966). For the last years in Taiwan he served in our General Assembly ecumenical office and archives. Jack was also an Elder at the Mingh-Te Presbyterian Church Taipei and served on several PCT school boards.

He also served as consultant to the Taiwn Bible Society; English Consultant to the Bureau of International Cultural and Education Relations (Wen Chiao Ch’u) of the Ministry of Education, Taiwan; contributed to the transcription and translation for publication the Diaries of Dr. George Leslie MacKay and Proof reading, for Asia Church Women’s Conference (ACWC). Outside of his church ministry Jack Geddes was also active in the Canadian community and was founding member, Canadian Society in Taiwan and founding member for the care and maintenance of Tamsui “Foreign” Cemetery and was often called upon to lead “history tours” in Tamsui.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church, 50 Erb St. W., Waterloo followed by burial at Parkview Cemetery and reception at Knox at noon.
