PCT’s Vision Of A New Country Revealed In A Book Launch: The Theology of Building Taiwan As A Country

Reported by Chiu Kuo-rong

In the evening on October 28, a genuine Taiwanese political theology written by Rev Lo Kong-hi, published by PCT General Assembly and edited by Taiwan Church Press, was formally launched at Chi-Nan Presbyterian Church to proclaim to the public PCT’s vision of Taiwan as a new and independent country.

Rev Lo Kong-hi, a professor of theology from Tainan Theological College and Seminary, expressed that the immigrant of a particular land should not take over the sovereignty of the original inhabitant society and therefore should not impose any myth of state on all people according to the Bible. So, he cannot accept the constitution legitimacy of the Republic of China(ROC) and the discourse of ROC as an independent and sovereign state.

Rev Lo remarked that the ROC constitution was not established by Taiwanese people. Instead, it was hastily drawn and arbitrarily fabricated by KMT as a colonial and oppressive regime to Taiwan society. KMT’s dictatorship in Taiwan is totally against the teaching of the Bible that the immigrant should not trespass to rule the original inhabitant society, Rev Lo said, adding that the border of ROC also absurdly contained the lands of many neighboring countries.

A constitution complaint to biblical teachings should be corporeally drawn by the people with freedom in a general will, said Rev Lo, and this is the principle of self-determination, indicated in PCT’s historical statement of Human Rights Declaration at 1977, which was based on a prophetic theology and human rights concern.

In addition, this self-determination principle is also “what we meant as the true covenant between the people and God, a solid foundation of building a new and independent country!”, Rev Lo reiterated.
