US Is Urged To Support Taiwan Independence By Civilian Groups

Reported by Chiu Kho-rong

When Xi Jinping, China's President, paid a visit to USA from 22 to 28 September, many American Taiwanese held ademonstration condemning China's military threat to Taiwan and urged President Barack Obama to recognize Taiwan independence before the White House on 25 September. On the same day at Taiwan, Taiwan Independence Party(TIP) demonstrated before American Institute in Taiwan(AIT) asking US to support Taiwan Independence.

TIP expressed that the purpose of their demonstration was to condemn the military threat of China, encourage theTaiwanese with the determination to fight for Taiwan and protect this island from military invasion, and remind President Obama that the Communist China is the only trouble-maker for the peace across the strait. TIP also demanded AIT to inform Obama administration that the Taiwanese were resolute to fight for the self-determination and independence for themselves.

Ms Susan E. Rice, US National Security Advisor, delivered a speech at George Washington University on 21September, reiterating the policy of US on Taiwan. She said, "The longstanding position of the United States is unchanged. We remain committed to our “one China” policy based on the three Joint Communiques and the Taiwan Relations Act. Our fundamental interest is in peaceful and stable cross-Strait relations, and we oppose unilateral changes to the status quo by either side."

Regarding such statement of US's Taiwan policy, Prof Liu Chong-yi of Taiwan Ethnic Alliance points out that theonly trouble-maker across-Strait is obviously the Communist China. And this is a well-known fact that US should not pretend to be ignorant. In fact, Taiwan's status quo is kept being changed unilaterally by China and the interests of both Taiwan and US became increasingly disadvantaged.

When President Obama received Xi Jinping at the White House on 25 September, three independence groups fromTaiwan, Tibet and East Turkestan(Uyghurstan) demonstrated together in the Lafayette Park before the White House, asking their independence from the Communist China.
