World Vision Taiwan Urges Churches To Concern Syria Refugee And Their Children's Education

Reported by Lin Yi-ying

On June 18, at the HQ of World Vision Taiwan, many pastors and evangelists across Taiwan come to attend the morning prayer assembly commemorating World Refugee Day, an UN memorial date for global refugee, and put a special plead to pray and raise fund for the education of Syria refugee's children.

After the civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, over 3 millions refugees fled into Lebanon and Jordan. As about half of these refugee are children and juveniles, who are an urgent task for UN humanitarian help, World Vision Taiwan therefore invests lots of resources and concerns on the related education project - Child Friendly Spaces(CFS).

From 2013, World Vision also started to push the project of WASH, which means Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene: supplying easy and light plastic container to storage clean water, building big water tank and installing sewage management system. Now, in average, 7 people in refugee camps can be allocated a public toilet. This tremendously improves the sanitary health of refugee camps and reduce the spread of contagious disease.

Within CFS, youths in Lebanon or Jordan refugee camps would be hired to teach the children and juveniles; classrooms of local school or available spaces in mosque would be recruited to push the learning and education project: At least 4 days weekly and three hours per day, mathematics, natural sciences, English and Arabic languages would be taught.

Currently, there are 1500 students enrolled in CFS.Anita Delhaas-van Dijk, Chairman of World Vision Lebanon, hopes this education project won't be suspended and could help children carry on their further education when they return Syria.
