WCC: Webinar will highlight wisdom from indigenous communities related to COVID-19

A 29 October webinar entitled “Indigenous Peoples: Wisdom and Resilience,” will share the hope, resilience, and encouragement of indigenous communities in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the many indigenous people, COVID-19 has heightened existing vulnerabilities and inequalities, further exacerbating current inadequacies within systems and infrastructures. The coronavirus is not only posing a continuing health threat but also more critically threatens the very survival and existence of many indigenous communities.

This webinar will show that Indigenous Peoples continue to rise in hope and resilience, offering encouragement, wisdom and a vision of world where all can continue to live sustainably, equitably, and justly.

Participants will hear the experiences and stories of indigenous peoples, and learn some of their traditional wisdom related to sustainable living.

The webinar, second in a series of webinars on COVID-19 perspectives organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC), will feature the following speakers:

  • Cindy Naameni Kobei, African Gospel Church, Kenya, Indigenous Ogiek Community of the Mau Forest, Kenya. Program coordinator at the International Alliance of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples of the Tropical Forest.
  • Risten Turi Aleksandersen, general secretary, Sami Church Council
  • Juan Chavez, Aymara from Bolivia, member of the Ecumenical Indigenous Peoples Network Reference Group
