Mr. Walter Carruthers (嘉華德) KA Hoa-Tek (1928-2024)

Walter Carruthers went home to the Lord on Thursday, 24th October 2024, aged 96 - he died peacefully at the Castleview Care Home, Alnwick where he had been cared for the past recent years due to deteriorating health situation.

A mission partner of the United Reformed Church, born 13 October 1928, Walter Carruthers and his wife Doreen, together with children Lyn and Paul came to Taiwan to serve the Lord. They first arrived Taiwan on 23 November 1957; following a period of Taiwanese language study, Walter was assigned to teach English at the Chang-Jung Boys School in Tainan. During 1963-64 he briefly taught at Tunghai University, Taichung as he deputized for fellow URC partner the late Mr. Ivor Shepherd, who was away on furlough. The ensuing years Walter was assigned to both the Tainan Theological College and Seminary and the Cheng-Kung University where he continued to teach English up until 1967 when felt led to resign to return his native land, England.

Funeral service will be held at The Parish Church of Saint Bartholomew Whittingham (2 Church View, Whittingham, Alnwick NE66 4UP) on Monday 18th November 2024 at 12 p.m. followed by the burial. A Memorial Service and celebration of Walter Carruthers' life will be at St James United Reformed Church (Pottergate, Alnwick, NE66 1JW) at 2 p.m.
