APPENDIX I.

Appeal Issued on the Occasion of
the 130th Anniversary of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan

The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, having planted its roots in Taiwan, identifying with all its inhabitants and showing concern about the future of Taiwan and its development, wrote various public statements which addressed issues and goals, many of which have now been achieved. Today, with a Taiwan still facing uncertainties about its future, the threat of military force from China, and the minds of its people having become uneasy and self-centered, we again appeal for the following:

I. To firmly establish Taiwan's independent national standing and raise Taiwan's international status. [We] believe the government should immediately make "decision by the people" a reality, hold a national referendum regarding Taiwan's official name, confirm its independent national standing, positively apply for United Nations membership, raise Taiwan's international status and ensure Taiwan's liberty and security.

II. To respect the people's will, and use peaceful means to resolve the conflict between Taiwan and China. Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country; the international community should respect the will of the people to govern themselves and assist the two countries of Taiwan and China to build up peaceful coexistence. Faced with China's military and verbal threats, the people of Taiwan should stand firm, promote harmony between races and ethnic groups, manifest love of country, and unite to defend this nation.

III. To fervently preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and reshape the spirit of the people. Christians should bear the responsibility of mission, and actively preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We must be the light and salt of our society, share the abundance of our life in Christ with others and help reshape the spirit of the Taiwanese. We must uphold human dignity and raise the quality of life, which means to make Taiwanese society one that is full of justice, peace and joy.

For God's Kingdom is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of the righteousness, peace and joy which the Holy Spirit gives. (Romans 14:17)
