Ho-Ping Church Invited to Attend Taipei Christmas Charity Fair to Witness Good News

Reported by Chiu Kuo-rong from Taipei

A charity fair, 2024 Taipei Christmas Infinite Love, jointly organized by the Department of Information and Tourism of Taipei City Government and some Christian churches was launched in Daan Forest Park at Taipei City on December 14.

Ho-Ping presbyterian church of the Chi Hsin presbytery set up a booth, via an exhibit on Rev Dr. MacKay’s ministry in Taiwan, showcasing to the public the missionary history of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT). Smahan church of Tayal presbytery and Taipei Indigenous College Student Center also attended the charity fair to raise funds for their church-building and campus ministries respectively.

Rev Tsai Wei-lun, chief pastor of Hoh-Ping Church, said the charity fair of Taipei Christmas Infinite Love had entered its fifth annum since 2020, and Hoh-Ping Church was again invited to participate the city-wide event. This year, 2024, Taipei City Government changed the charity’s precedent outlooks into an theme-park exhibit with diverse blocks and booths.

The booth of Ho-Ping Church, introducing Rev Dr MacKay’s mission via oil painting and historical narratives, wished the public in the charity fair to understand the PCT’s mission and achievements in Taiwan.

Rev Tsai said, “through this charity fair, we hope to show Rev MacKay’s contribution to Taiwan society, and highlight God’s love and compassion, as well as a Christian faith contextualized in Formosa island through a resilient efforts pledged by the PCT.”

The very booth of Ho-Ping Church showcased oil paintings and artistic postcards created by Mr Kuo Wen-hsion, an artist from the Hsin-Tien Church of Taipei presbytery. One of his paintings – The Last Supper, featured by the faces and cultures of various indigenous peoples, became the spotlight artwork in the booth and attracted many visitors to stop and take photographs. Rev Tsai claimed “these Christian artworks not only express our faith, but also attest the vibrant dialogues between diverse cultures in Taiwan!”

Smahan church took this charity fair to proclaim its mission and present their plan to build a new church. They sold self-made agro-foods, skin care creams and baked tea-leaves beneficial to lung in order to raise funds for church-building. To facilitate raising fund for Smahan church, many indigenous college students studying at Taipei also came to join this charity event with their passionate singing and dancing.

Rev Alang Dakisliniang, pastor of the PCT Taipei Indigenous College Student Center, led some students to auction artworks engraved with the most fashionable words of “TEAM TAIWAN” and sell the PCT badges with flaming bush, a logo reminiscent of Rev Dr MacKay’s famous motto as “rather burned than rusted”!

“This charity fair showcases the fellowship spirit of mutual support,” Rev Tsai remarked, “we look forward to a continuous cooperation in future, which is not only a fund-raising opportunity for church-building, but also a wonderful teamwork fellowship to witness the ecumenical vision!”
