Will to Act, Sacrifice And Respond Is The Key To Change China, Not Technology Or Economic Development

Reported by Simon Lin

On November 15, the Chinese Human Rights Lawyer Teng Biau was invited by Suang-lien Missionary Strategic Center in Tainan Theological College and Seminary.delivering a speech about the prospect of China's human rights and democracy. He stressed that, not technology or economic development, but the will to act, sacrifice and respond is the key to lead China into a free and democratic society.

According to Teng, torture and abuse of prisoner are very serious in recent years, as many cases of the so-called "non-normal death" were happened to the inmates. As a matter of fact, these deaths were due to torture or abuse by the police or prison officials; yet these cases were excused by drinking too much water, dream walking, childish playing and etc.

Many incredible human rights abuse requires global attention: Such as 90% of death penalty are executed in China; Tenthousands death penalty inmates were executed by China, but the name list was deemed as top secret, fearing that foreign countries will investigate if the executed prisoners' organs were taken out and exported overseas. Also, Reporters Without Borders said that the Chinese reporters under siege is the most high within the globe.

Due to many factors like the communist party replace the class struggle with the legalized process after 1989, the efforts ofdemocratic activists and the rise of liberalism thoughts etc, the Chinese human rights movement started her footsteps from 2003. Three yeras later, huan rights movement started to show up on the streets and became more organized. For example, they have once surrounded the court house to show their support for lawyer Chen Kwang-chen; flash appearance and demonstration on the street; criticize the current politics by American congress rule and etc.

In recent years, people can see the rising "new citizen movement", demonstrating on the street, speaking in the public andcollecting signatures to ask the officials to announce their financial assets to transparency. In the meantime, people also ask the rights of education, firing the disqualified officials and amending the codes of assembly and demonstration.

Teng remarked that there is an unavoidable clash between the Chinese human rights movement and the maintenance logic of the Chinese Communist Part, because in the recent past decades there are annually about 200 thousands cases of human rights abuse happen in China. Following the old rebels - like Tibet-independents, Uyghur Independents and Taiwan Independents, the Chinese Communist Part also created the so-called "new black five rogues" - including the human rights lawyer, dissident, minority group(ex. LGBT), internet leader and the biggest NGO - the underground Family Church with her 70 millions members.

Finally, illustrating through his extreme suffering in prison but encountering a sympathetic jailer who would let him walk outof cell to breathe fresh air, Teng expressed his touching and hope: "If the destined human nature will not succumb to the evil, then the desire of the Chinese to democracy and freedom will also never yield!" Teng deeply believes democracy will come whatever. And he expects more people could concern and act for the change of China.
