(Regional Webinar) At the nexus of Human Rights, Gender and Health in COVID-19

For those of you in the Asia region, I wanted to share an upcoming youth dialogue taking place on Friday 24th April to explore the intersection between human rights, health and gender in the context of the COVID-19 response. Please do share with your colleagues and networks, and we hope to see many of you there.

JOIN OUR ONLINE RESPONSE! This regional dialogue is organized by the United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth, Asia Youth Peace Network and Youth Voices Count to discuss the nexus of human rights, gender, and health in the humanitarian space.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed much of the weaknesses of states in responding to a global and national health crisis. The lack of sustainable and reactive health and humanitarian policies has left many marginalized communities suffering from the effects brought by COVID-19. Marginalized groups, especially sexual and gender minorities (i.e. women and LGBTI), those in rural communities and informal economies, and adolescents and youth are the most affected.

Speakers:

(1) Sarah Elago, Congressperson, Philippine House of Representatives

(2) Sai Jyothirmai Racherla, Programme Director, The Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW) and APFSD Youth Co-Convenor, Asia Pacific Regional Constituency Engagement Mechanism

(3) Lieu Anh Vu, Executive Director, ILGA ASIA

Moderators:

(1) Poorvaprabha Patil, Medical Students Association of India; UN MGCY Regional Focal Point for Health SDG 3

(2) Justin Francis Bionat, Executive Director, Youth Voices Count

This dialogue hopes to bridge that gap in knowledge and collaboration between individuals and organizations primarily working on sexual and gender rights and those individuals at the forefront of legislation, human rights advocacy, and humanitarian responses. The peace and humanitarian angle should be coupled with a gendered lens in order to fulfill the rights of marginalized communities.
