Thanksgiving and Celebration for the Life of Rev. Elizabeth (Liz) Jean Brown (包珮玉 牧師) (1934.11.06 – 2025.12.13)

The Officers of Presbyterian Church in Taiwan express their heartfelt condolences and deep gratitude to God for a beloved and respected former Missionary partner of the United Reformed Church (URC).

Rev. Elizabeth (Liz) Jean Brown (包珮玉 牧師) was called home to the Lord peacefully on 13 December 2025 at Headingly Hall Care Home, Leeds LS6 2DD ENGLAND U.K. where she had been supported and well cared for in her final years as her eyesight and physical health deteriorated.

Born 6 November 1934, Elizabeth J Brown completed her early education and went on to Girton College, University of Cambridge, where she was awarded M.A. in Mathematics and Geography. She then attended London University Institute of Education and earned her Postgraduate Certificate in Education. Early on she had felt the call to full time Christian ministry, however, ordination for women in that era was not an option so Liz trained to be teacher in preparation for service overseas. After attending Carey Hall United Missionary Training College, Selly Oak, Birmingham and subsequently appointed as missionary by the URC formerly Presbyterian Church of England (PCE) Elizabeth J. Brown (包珮玉 ) was sent by the then English Presbyterian Mission (EPM) to Taiwan arriving on 31 August 1961.

Following two years of language study, excelling in both Taiwanese and Mandarin, Liz Brown was assigned to the University Christian Service Centre in Tainan where she served (1963-1976) in University Student Work and Teaching at the Cheng Kung University, Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. Later she was appointed as Associate Director of the University Christian Service Centre. During the challenging and turbulent years in Taiwan (1976-1984) Elizabeth Brown was assigned to serve as the Assistant General Secretary of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan General Assembly and relocated to live in Taipei. It was during this time that former General Secretary (the late) Rev. Dr. C. M. Kao was imprisoned and Liz Brown proved to be invaluable, a wise, trusted and courageous coworker in those hard times. Throughout her ministry her language skills proved invaluable and she was an excellent translator.

Elected as an Elder of the PCT she served the Che-Lam Presbyterian Church Taipei for ten years. The heart desire of Liz Brown never left her and she went on to pursue theological studies at the Westminster College, Cambridge and the Taiwan Theological College and Seminary. On 16 June 1985 prior to returning to Taiwan for what would be her final term of service with the PCT, Liz was finally ordained as Christian Minister of the United Reformed Church (URC). Rev. Elizabeth Brown was appointed to serve as Chaplain and English teacher at the Taiwan Theological College and Seminary where she was a trusted and respected confidant, teacher and colleague. In 1989 she completed her missionary Service and Returned to England having accepted invitation of Leeds District of the United Reformed Church (URC) to serve as part of an Ecumenical Chaplaincy Team in Leeds University and Leeds Polytechnic until her retirement. Even though Rev. Liz Brown had left Taiwan several decades her interest, care and support for the PCT its mission and country continued. With gratitude – rest in peace.

A Service of Committal will take place on 9 January 2026 (Friday) at 3:15 p.m. at Lawnswood Crematorium. On the following Friday, 16 January 2026 at 2:00 p.m. a Service of Thanksgiving and Celebration for the Life of Rev. Elizabeth (Liz) Jean Brown (包珮玉 牧師) will be held at Stainbeck United Reformed Church, Meanwood LS7 2PP.

As so many of her friends and past colleagues are scattered far and wide the URC is planning to live-stream the Service which will be accessible through ZOOM and also recorded for later viewing.
