Taiwan Church News 2636, September 8, 2002 Translated by David Alexander "Let me live so that I may praise you." (Psalm 119:175) Siao-mei joined a health club. The owner of the club was happy to enroll her because more members meant more profit for him. The staff were happy to see her, too, because more members meant more job security for them. People join health clubs for many reasons. Some want to lose weight, others to develop stronger bodies. Some men join in order to meet women (and some women join to meet men). Health clubs have exercise machines, swimming pools, and a lot of other facilities. There are also coaches who will advise members on how to get the best results, depending on their purpose. First, though, they must ask the question, "What do you want?" Siao-mei joined the health club after many of her women relatives in her mother's and grandmothers' generations developed life-shortening health conditions. When the coach asked her, "What do you want?" She replied, "I want to live." But why live? For many people it is just the alternative to death. At base, why live? The writer of Psalm 119 asked God to let him live, "so that I may praise you." That was his reason, what's yours? Prayer: Let us live, O Lord, and know why we want to.
