Anti-Nuclear Environmental Groups Stand Firm, Even Though Pro-Nuclear Referendum Passed

Reported by Chiu Kuo-rong

Though the referendum #16, a pro-nuclear referendum proposing nuclear energy continuously to be utilized in Taiwan after 2025 is passed with 5,895,560 yes-votes against 4,014,215 opposition-votes at the referendum held on November 24, most the anti-nuclear environmental groups still stand firm and oppose any revival of nuclear power plant in Taiwan.

According to Central Election Committee, the question raised by referendum #16 is that “Do you agree that subparagraph 1, Article 95 of Electricity Act, which reads”Nuclear-energy-based power-generating facilities shall wholly stop running by 2025″, should be abolished?”

Ms Tsuei Su-Hsin, spokeswoman of the national anti-nuclear alliance Stop Nukes Now, remarks that though the referendum result is a set-back for anti-nuclear movement but “we social movement activists have no rights to be indulged in any pessimism!”. She pledges that more efforts will be made to focus on the incoming referendum issue: whether the fourth nuclear power plant will be launched again?
