PCT And 50 Civil Rights Groups Oppose Religious Basic Act

Reported by Lin Yi-yin

The contentious legislation of Religious Basic Act(RBA) in Taiwan congress is temporarily withdrawn from the legislative agenda of due to a fierce condemnation and opposition from the media and civil groups in the end October.

A press conference, standing for 50 civil groups and asking the withdrawal of RBA, is held at the Legislative Yuan on October 24. Rev Cheng Ing-er, PCT Director of R&D Center, is also invited to express opposition to RBA before the media.

The statement from the civil groups criticize that people’s rights to education and health will be seriously infringed once RBA is passed as a law, because RBA allows the religiously affiliated school or hospital to deny access to those whose behavior are judged as “non-compliant to religious dogma”. This is totally against the constitution, claimed PCT and the civil groups.
