GOH To Host The 4th World Conference Of Women’s Shelter In 2019

Reported by Chiu Kuo-rong

The Garden of Hope(GOH) Foundation, the most famous non-government and non-profit social institute campaigning for rescuing young girls and women from sexual exploitation or domestic violence in Taiwan, was elected to host the 4th World Conference of Women’s Shelter(WCWS) at Kaohsiung on November 5-8, 2019.

Initiating from 2008, the WCWS was held every three to four years in different countries around the world: Edmonton(Canada, 2008), Washington D.C.(USA, 2012) and Hague(Netherlands, 2015). It is the first time ever for Taiwan’s social movement campaigners to host such an international conference. It is estimated that 1,500 to 2,000 women human rights delegates from about 120 countries will arrive Kaohsiung, Taiwan in November 2019.

In a press brief announcing the history-breaking event of hosting WCWS in 2019, Ms Hui-jung Chi, chief executive officer of GOH, pointed out gender equality and human rights are two most important values since The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), passed in 1979 by the UN General Assembly.

The 4th World Conference of Women’s Shelter would be an extraordinary window to showcase Taiwan’s achievements of how the human rights of young girls and women are cared and concerned from its very beginning to an effective network with legal protection and substantial support, said Ms Chi, adding that there were certainly many difficult challenges on women’s human rights still lying ahead within Taiwan society, but it is an excellent opportunity to share and work together to find out ways marching toward an ideal society of gender equality.
