Non-Violence Resistance: Gene Sharp’s Legacy For The Oppressed

To commemorate the very influential and worldly renown “godfather of non-violence resistance”, Prof Gene Sharp (January 21, 1928 – January 28, 2018) , a memorial service is held at Chi-Nan Presbyterian Church in the evening on September 16.

Before a footage of Prof Sharp is broadcast in the service, the audience stand up with one minute silence to remember and pay tribute to those extraordinary contributions what Prof Sharp has made to make our world different and better for the oppressed.

Prof ChhoàTeng-kùi, both a NTU Honorary Professor and translator of Prof Sharp’s 2009 publication Self-Liberation: A Guide to Strategic Planning for Action to End a Dictatorship or Other Oppression, reiterates the critical insight, why Prof Sharp distrusts violence as a viable way to overthrow the dictators, because violence begets even more bloody violence, simply put.

Prof Chhoà remarks, thanks to God’s nature as a love-caring and non-violent Father, the resistance movement in Taiwan from the end of 1970s had hardly evolved into any grand-scale violence. This facilitates Taiwan society to accept and appreciate the positive reform brought by the 2014 Sun Flower Student Movement, and makes a self-liberation in Taiwan is just around the corner, Prof Chhoà analyzes with a strong confidence.
