The World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee will convene in-person from 15-18 June at the Ecumenical Center in Geneva for the first time since 2018. While solemnly acknowledging the grave crises facing the world, the WCC governing body will also bring a spirit of joyful gathering as preparations for the WCC 11th Assembly continue. The executive committee will gather the day before on 14 June in Geneva.

This will be the 6th meeting of this central committee since it was elected at the WCC 10th Assembly in Busan, Republic of Korea, in 2013. The proceedings will be undergirded by the assembly theme Christs love moves the world to reconciliation and unity.”

The agenda includes review and action on the draft unity statement for the assembly, as well as on amendments proposed by the working group on constitution and rules, and by-laws for two commissions.

The agenda also includes the election of a new general secretary in closed session as stipulated in the supplement to the rules. Two closed sessions are allocated for the process of the election.

The only standing committee to meet will be the public issues committee, which will prepare statements on situations of concern for consideration by the central committee. Confessional meetings and a womens meeting will also take place, and the central committee will observe Thursdays in Black to support a world free from rape and violence.

A memorial prayer for the late Metropolitan Gennadios will be part of the opening day.

Executive Committee meeting

The 25-person Executive Committee is the WCC governing body, with members from churches in every region, moderated by Dr Agnes Abuom. It meets twice a year to monitor ongoing work, supervise the budget and deal with policy matters referred to it by the Central Committee.

The Central Committee elects twenty of its members to serve as the Executive Committee of the WCC, along with the Central Committee officers - moderator, two vice-moderators and the general secretary - as well as the moderators of its programme and finance committees.

Meeting twice a year, the Executive Committee's role in policy-making is limited to matters specifically referred to it by the Central Committee - apart from unforeseen emergencies, in regard to which it may take provisional decisions. It appoints programme staff, monitors ongoing work, and supervises the budget approved by the Central Committee.
