Carried

Translated by David Alexander

Listen to me O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from your birth, carried from the womb; even to your old age I am he, even when you turn gray I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save. (Isaiah 46:3-4)

When Typhoon Bilis struck Old Chiang's cabin in Nantou County, the house began to flood. He knew that if he would climb the hill outside his back door, he would be safe. He thought to take some of his precious things along. He placed his official papers in a waterproof bag and packed his military medals in a small suitcase. After locking the door, he began to climb the slope in the rain.

He had not walked for very long when, because he was carrying too much, he had to choose what to discard and what to keep. The typhoon was too strong and the path too rough. If he didn't put something down, he would lose his life.

Because he dropped some things, he is still living in his cabin today. What he couldn't carry, he couldn't save.

God forsakes none of his beloved people. From our birth, from the womb, we have been cared for, carried and saved.

Prayer: You who have carried us from the womb, carry us back to you. AMEN
