Translated by David Alexander

These are the things that you shall do: speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace; do not devise evil in your hearts against one another; and love no false oath. For all these are things that I hate, says the Lord. (Zechariah 8:16-17)

As Old Chiang became weaker and more isolated in his little house, he became slightly forgetful. The elderly care helper from the community rebuilding care center knew that Old Chiang did not want to go live in an old folks home. She put notes around the house, written in big clear words, reminding him to take his keys and lock the door when he went out. Reminding him to turn off the stove after he heated water for tea, even reminding him to change his underwear every day.

There was also a main daily list to keep track of whether or not he had taken his morning, afternoon and evening medicines.

The older "Old Chiang" became, the more his life was controlled by lists. And they served him well. He was able to remain in his own place for many years "with a little help from his friends."

Throughout history God's prophets have given God's people lists of things to do. Some of these lists are about religious life, and others about social and political behavior. Sometimes the religious, social and political are tightly bound together that they are as one.

God says, "Speak truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace; do not devise evil in your hearts against one another; and love no false oath.""

Post that on your wall. Whether you are involved in religion, society or politics. It will serve you well.

Prayer: God of truth, lead us to speak and judge in truth. AMEN
